Crafting an Innovative Learning Experience with Intuitive Curriculum Mapping, Seamless Collaboration, and Optimized User Roles

Curriculum Mapping Experience for Park Tudor

Elevate is a curriculum mapping platform designed by teachers for teachers, emphasizing ease of use and transparency. It provides an interactive, searchable course map that simplifies updating and editing courses to meet faculty and parental needs, along with organizational goals. Elevate supports new teacher onboarding and helps maintain curriculum alignment, enhancing transparency for parents and aiding in reaccreditation processes.

Elevate partnered with Park Tudor to craft a curriculum mapping experience enabling parents, teachers, super admins (Director of Curriculum), and department admins to seamlessly add and update courses, ensuring better alignment and offering a comprehensive overview of student courses at a glance. Additionally, it simplifies the onboarding process for new teachers.

Problem

Park Tudor faced the pressing need for a robust Learning Management System tool to ensure alignment between parents, faculty members, and students’ curriculum. Faculty members relied on handwritten notes, Microsoft Word, and Excel for course creation and updates, leading to collaboration and course alignment challenges. This need for streamlined processes became even more critical during the pandemic when most students transitioned to online classes.

Solution

Elevate not only addressed Park Tudor’s need for a robust tool but also provided a solution that helped schools nationwide facing similar challenges in curriculum management and alignment between faculty members and parents.

Approach

To address the problem and meet the given requirements, I developed a visual permission matrix outlining roles and tasks. This framework guided the ideation process and user testing phases, ensuring the creation of an effective and user-friendly system.

Visual Permission Matrix

I created a visual permissions matrix to represent the access rights and permissions for different roles within the facility. This matrix includes roles such as Super Admin, Admin, Teachers, and Parents. This visual representation helps define which specific features or pages are accessible to each user role.

With the visual permission matrix I decided to created the table using Miro and collaborating with the software engineer to list out page and features for access

Design Ideation

With the visual permission matrix completed, As well as having background knowledge. I began crafting various iterations of user screens tailored to their respective access levels, such as the curriculum map, Admin Dashboard, tags, and other relevant screens.

I created an additional ideation for the curriculum map to provide another perspective on how users can view, add, and edit courses.

Usertesting

Upon completing the ideation phase, I collaborated closely with faculty members and parents to conduct user testing of my design. In total, I tested with over 25 participants. The user testing focused on time-on-task metrics and various access-related tasks tailored to different types of faculty members.

This partnership enabled us to seamlessly implement Park Tudor’s personalized curriculum mapping experience, ensuring a tailored solution that meets the unique needs of the institution.

Updating and editing a course is simple and intuitive. Elevate focuses on ease of use, eliminating the need for hours of training. Elevate is simplistic, elegant, and highly efficient. Once a course is updated, it appears within the course alignment. New features allow facilities to greatly enhance their courses by adding outcomes, resources, and more.

Style and Component Design Guide for Elevate

As the designer for Elevate, I established a global standard for color, typography, and Elevate’s logo ahead of time to streamline the process for enhancing Park Tudor’s curriculum experience.

Color

For the Elevate color palette, I selected a Vibrant Modern Palette that includes both cool and warm tones with a mix of muted and bright colors. This combination aims to be dynamic and visually appealing, ensuring the design is both stylish and engaging. Additionally, the palette is accessibility-friendly, meeting both AA and AAA standards.

  • Headings: Poppins bold
  • Secondary Content: Poppins regular
This combination created a cohesive look and feel with well-matched font groupings. The scale setup follows the principles of Material Design 2, ensuring consistent increments

Components

I standardized components based on the requirements provided by faculty members. This approach aimed to expedite the design process and enhance collaboration with developers. The general rule for standardization was to include any component used multiple times across one or more pages in the design system. Additionally, components were stress-tested on different viewports.

Outcome

Elevate seamlessly developed and integrated Park Tudor’s curriculum mapping tool, prioritizing user-friendliness and transparency. Despite its small team of two, Elevate expanded its outreach, forming partnerships with other schools, and underscoring its commitment to innovative educational solutions.
